No. 11 Murray Hill Square

Wilcox-Becker House

Shop name: The Yarn Peddler

Entrepreneurs in the mid 1800s, John and Henry Wilcox owned over 400 acres of property on the north and south sides of Floral Avenue where Murray Hill Square is now located. John built his home there, and it remained in the family for several generations. In 1927 Mary and Conrad Becker purchased it, adding dormers, an extra room on the first floor, indoor plumbing, and central heating. They also built a chicken coop, selling chickens and eggs to local residents. The original house still stands at 340 South Street, without the chicken coop.
