No. 7 Murray Hill Square

The Burnett Grist Mill

Shop names: Archer & Lewis, MacHugh

Located at the corner of Springfield Avenue and Maple Street, the mill was originally built in 1816 as a tannery. It served as a cider, grist, and sawmill when Albert Burnett bought it in 1890. Burnett expanded the operation to include a steam carpet cleaning works. Active in local government, Burnett cast the deciding vote to keep Murray Hill as part of New Providence rather than have it annexed to Summit. The mill caught fire in the late 1920s and was razed in the 1930s.
